How important is self-esteem to recovery?

Our essential problem is not how we value ourselves but how we value God. Solomon did not say that the beginning of wisdom was a high opinion of self; rather, a high and holy view of God (see Prov. 1:7). The glory of God’s salvation is that it liberates us from our life-crippling bondage to self and enables us to see the beauty and magnificence of Christ. This is what sets us free from sin!
