If you could ask God one question, what would it be?
• Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?
• Who did Cain marry?
• How did Noah smell after 375 consecutive days on the Ark?
• Was Jonah actually in the belly of a whale for three days and nights?

Seriously, if you had the opportunity to ask God one question and knew that he would give you an answer, what would you ask Him?
• Who should I marry?
• Does prayer really make a difference?
• When will the world end?
• Why did you take my dad when I was child?

A recent poll was actually taken of adults across the nation. They were asked: “If you could get in contact with God directly, ask a question, and get an immediate reply – what would you ask?”

Here are the results:
• What is my purpose in life? (34%)
• Will I have life after death? (19%)
• Why do bad things happen? (16%)
• No idea what they would ask (12%)
• Does intelligent life exist elsewhere? (7%)
• How long will I live? (6%)

The Bible is full of questions various people asked of God. There is one in particular, however, which I think tops them all. It was asked by King David.

To appreciate the question, you have to understand the context. He is at the height of his success. He has experienced countless victories on the battlefield. His kingdom is fully established, its borders beyond compare. He is rich. He is popular. He is happily married (maybe too much considering the number of wives he had), and his quiver is full.

It has been a long journey. He came from a small village, a simple family. He was anointed king at fifteen but was not in power until age 30. Between those years he lived as a fugitive, hunted by an insecure, psychotic king. He was constantly in danger and faced several setbacks.

Notwithstanding, God fulfilled his promise and gloriously established his kingship and blessed him immeasurably. Reflecting on the faithfulness and goodness of God, David breaks out and asks:

“Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign Lord?” (2 Sam. 7:18-19)

That’s the question! “Why God!? Why have you been so good to me?” It is a question asked by a man stunned by the grace of God. So overwhelmed was David, in fact, that he was seated when he asked this question. He couldn’t stand up!

The most amazing reality in the universe is that God loves you. He sent His Son to die in your place. He desires unending relationship with you.

This is mind-boggling! We have ignored Him. Scorned Him. Squandered His gifts. We have lived in active, willful opposition to Him. We have exchanged the glory of the infinite God for things of no comparable worth. We have gone to the Fountain of Life, taken a sip, and spit it out saying, “YUCK!” And yet, He still wants us!

The Apostle Paul put it like this: “All of us (were at one time) . . . gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. . . . We were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ. . . . For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:3-4, 8).

Friend, receive His love today. He stands knocking at your heart’s door. He will refuse no one who comes to Him.

“I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene,
and wonder how He could love me a sinner condemned unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be!
How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me.”
